report of 15th international coloproctology meeting
The 15th international coloproctology meeting has accomplished 30 years with the 2018 edition!
A beautiful congress has concluded among the applause of the attendees in the wonderful Turin setting. A pleasantly unexpected heat caught everyone unawares and even the most resistant gianduiotti melted under the sun.
A great event and a great success inevitably derive from a great organizing committee:
- Mario Trompetto MD
- Giuseppe Clerico MD
- Alberto Realis Luc MD
- Antonio Spinelli MD
- Paris Tekkis MD
as local commite:
- Gaetano Gallo
- Simona Graziani
and Professor RJ Nicholls as honorary president
All the main topics of colorectal surgery have been presented by famous specialists from all over the world highlighting the different therapeutic alternatives, either surgical or not.
The CONSULTANT CORNER was extremely interesting and dynamic session in which a panel of 4-5 international specialists discussed the approach and management of real clinical cases, from the “simplest ones” (for which the surgical approach seems easy and the only alternative even if but we have understood that it is not) to the more “complex ones” in which the pluriannual experience and dedication of a referral centre make the difference in the decision-making algorythm.
The list of consultant corner with the panelists is following
- HAEMORRHOIDS: A. Dziki, A. Infantino, G. Milito, S.C. Nahas, R. Perinotti
- EARLY RECTAL CANCER: M. Berho, G. Brown, C. Coco, A. Martling, R. Perez
- ANAL FISTULA: M. Adamina, A. Amato, G. Naldini, S. Post, B. Roche
- CONSITIPATION: G. Bassotti, A. D’Hoore, R. O’Connell, F. Pucciani, N. Smart
- FECAL INCONTINENCE: D.F. Altomare, C. Knowles, Y. Maeda, J. Martellucci
- RECURRENT RECTAL CANCER: P Delrio, T. Holm, A. Karachun, S. Pucciarelli, P. Sagar
- INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE: S. Clark, M.F. Jaboli, Y. Maeda, R.K.S. Phillips, F. Selvaggi
Another important element of this congress were the lectures.
Among the most significant I cite:
- The value of centralization for rectal cancer treatment. M. Chand – has shown the important of centralization of this kind of procedure . In fact, this lack has an evident effect revealed by the very high rate of stoma carrier after RAR, mainly in the USA.
- Social media in colorectal surgery. R. Brady – who showed us the importance of social media in the colorectal field both as a source of sharing knowledge and also as a tool for patients enrollment. He made it clear that the world and the society go on and we have to deal with them! Shortly the full video on my Youtube channel
- TaTME: where are we and where are we going? R. Hompes
- To publish or not to publish. The Editor’s dilemma G. Gagliardi – he for once brought us beyond the cover, making us see through the eyes of an editor in chief. Shortly the full video on my Youtube channel
- Pushing the limit of Watch and Wait. R. Perez
- New technologies in rectal cancer surgery A. Arezzo – who instead made us jump in the near future by presenting technological innovations that are moving from prototypes to the reality becoming always more applicable to the clinical practice.
- Update on restorative proctocolectomy. S. Clark
- State of art: anal fistula. N. Smart

I also report a large presence of posters with new studies in progress. Among the 63 posters exhibited, the best poster was awarded to Alice Frontali (in the picture below) for the study entitled: IS FOLLOW-UP STILL MANDATORY MORE THAN 5 YEARS AFTER SURGERY FOR COLORECTAL CANCER? “A very interesting study conducted with Prof Panis team at the hospital in Beaujon in Paris, which underlines the importance of long-term follow-up in these patients.
The Young-SICCR fellows (in the pictures below) have a strong presence in the event with active participation in the various sessions and with numerous poster presentations. The entire event was also followed on Twitter by those who could not attend through the constant update using hashtags: # IMOC2018 and #colorectalsurgery. Many sessions also had a live HD streaming.
The new technology breaks down the distance and increases the sharing of knowledge.
For a consciously shared surgery.
